Our Story

The story behind Maraies

How a love of old books became a line of leather bags.

Chapter one · The feeling

Every reader knows it.

You reach the last page of a book that changed you — and then you have to leave it. The story goes back on the shelf. You go back to your life: the commute, the classroom, the office. And nothing you carry into that life says a word about the world you just lived in.

We think that’s a small tragedy. Maraies exists to fix it.

Chapter two · One bag

It started at a kitchen table.

Portrait of Jane Grey, founder of the Maraies Press
Jane Grey · Founder

In 2023 our founder, Jane Grey, printed the cover of her favorite copy of Dracula onto a plain leather bag. It wasn’t a product. It was just a way to keep the book close after the last page.

Then strangers started stopping her — on the train, in cafés, outside bookstores — to ask where the bag came from. Not because it was a bag. Because it was that book.

“I could never leave a good book behind,” she says. “It turned out nobody else could either. Readers recognize each other.”

— from one bag, made for no one but herself

Chapter three · The idea

A press, not a bag brand.

A press takes a story and gives it a body: paper, ink, a binding. Maraies does exactly that — the body just happens to be a bag.

Our artists redraw each book’s art to fit the shape it will live on. The ink is pressed into real leather, not printed on top, so it won’t peel or fade. The seams are stitched with waxed thread; the hardware is riveted on like the spine of a hardcover. See how each bag is made →

So we don’t think of a new design as a product launch. We think of it as a new edition of the book — one you can carry to work.

✦  A short history of the press  ✦

2025

Seven styles in print — wallets, totes, backpacks, crossbody, satchels, makeup bags. The 1,000th reader review arrives.

2026

300 designs in print, shipped tracked from our Arizona warehouse to readers everywhere.

Chapter four · The readers

Today the bags do the talking.

More than 1,500 readers have reviewed us — 83% with five stars. And they keep telling us the same story in different words: three strangers on one train ride asked about a Dracula. A teacher’s bag started a whole Poe unit at school. A sister “borrowed” an Alice and never gave it back.

The right bag doesn’t just hold your things. It finds your people.

That was true of the very first bag, and it’s the standard every new design has to meet. Read their stories →

Chapter five · Your turn

Your story is probably here.

We keep 300 designs in print across seven styles — gothic classics, dark romances, the books you reread until the covers wear out. If a story ever refused to let you go, chances are we’ve bound it in leather already.

Welcome to the press — for the bold, the curious, and the ones who find beauty in the dark.

The people

A small press, on purpose.

Four people and one long worktable — small enough that every design gets argued over before it’s printed.
